Frequently Asked Questions

  • Cued Language (CL) and American Sign Language (ASL) are two distinct systems used by individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate.

Cued Language is a visual communication system that combines handshapes, hand placements, and mouth movements to represent the sounds of spoken language. It was developed in the 1960s as a way to provide access to spoken language for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. CL uses a set of hand cues to represent phonemes, allowing users to visually distinguish between similar-sounding words. This makes it an effective tool for enhancing speech reading and providing access to spoken language.

American Sign Language is a complete and natural language that has its own grammatical structure and syntax. It uses handshapes, facial expressions, body movements, and space to convey meaning. ASL is not based on spoken language and has its own unique vocabulary and grammar rules.

While both CL and ASL are visual communication systems used by individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, there are some key differences between them. CL is not a language, but tool used to support access to spoken English. It can be used in conjunction with speech or as a standalone communication system.

ASL, on the other hand, is a separate and independent language with its own linguistic features.

The choice between CL and ASL depends on various factors such as personal preference, educational background, and individual communication needs. Some individuals may choose to use both CL and ASL in different contexts or at different times depending on their needs. It's important to remember that communication options are personal choices, and what works best for one person may not work for another.
